What Is Coronavirus? | Symptoms & Disease Overview

Coronavirus (COVID19) has given us a lot of hardships this past 3 months. Not only that, it gave heartaches to the families who lost their loved ones because of this virus.

Today, a total number of 12,180,154 confirmed cases around the globe with staggering deaths total 552,380.

Now, enough of that. Let us have an overview of what is coronavirus (COVID-19)? What are the symptoms? And, how can we prevent ourselves from getting infected?

What Is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

We obviously know it is an infectious disease.  It is a new strain of coronavirus which first emerge in Wuhan, China last December 2019.

World Health Organization (WHO) officially announced the name of this new type of disease last February 11, 2020 which we already know now as Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Coronavirus disease 2019 / 2019 Novel Coronavirus, abbreviated as COVID-19; meaning: “CO” stands for “corona.” “VI” stands for “virus.” And, “D” for ”disease.”

The coronavirus (COVID-19) is not the same as the common coronaviruses that causes mild illness like colds. COVID-19 is a new type of disease causing patients to have respiratory illness and worse death. 

How Coronavirus (COVID-19) Is spread?

The new coronavirus can be spread person to person through droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. 

The droplets generally do not travel more than a few feet, and they fall to the surface in a few seconds. 

Study also shows that coronavirus can survive on surfaces for a few hours or days depending on varied conditions. This is why social physical distancing and mandatory wearing face masks are implemented in different cities in the world. 

How Do You Protect Yourself From Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

The first line of defense is our immune system. 

  • You need to boost your immune system because COVID-19 isn’t really that picky when it comes to race/age. It infects everyone including you reading this.
  • Do not go outside when it is really not needed except when if its an emergency. 
  • Do not forget to wear face masks at all times.
  • Frequently do wash your hands with soap and rubbing alcohol.  
  • Avoid touching your face, nose and eyes.
  • Always keep 1 meter distance from a person. 

Discipline starts within yourself. So, start acting like one. We have a saying, “prevention is better than cure.”.

  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Unexplained loss of taste or smell
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
